So that whole arc Eowyn went through about having to deal with the hyper chauvinistic Rohan culture that would not allow her or any woman to fight, the whole plight she went through to fight and prove herself, and the disguise she had to take on in order to participate and ultimately accomplish greatness...was pointless? Considering this takes place BEFORE Eowyn, long before, it really makes no sense to have female Rohan warriors as lore CLEARLY established that's NOT a thing until Eowyn makes it a thing. In fact, it's the very venue through which Tolkien chose to explore sexism. Nobody should be for this if Eowyn's feminism moment resonated with you. It's contradictory. Cue the cuck activists who'll call anyone who doesn't like it "sexist," but the truth is that all you have to do is watch or read The Two Towers and Return of the King without falling asleep to see...this makes ZERO sense in lore and completely undermines Eowyn's struggle and great achievements. The ultimate irony here: It's being done because "girl power," but through not making sense in lore, all they've actually done is completely devalue one of the greatest organic "girl power" moments in fiction. It's no longer special because, ah, apparently Rohan always had female warriors? Since when?! The lore literally makes the opposite clear. They actually just harmed the very message they're trying to send.

The only thing that comes to my mind is, yes, Bombadil may not care about the ring, but he did care enough to rescue the hobbits once captured in the barrow downs. So if he had no worries of the on goings of the world, why did he bother himself to rescue them.

Bombadil definitely should not have been in the LOTR films. Having a character display the ability to be utterly unaffected by it would have diminished the power of TOR in moviegoers eyes. It would have lessed the stakes of the destruction of the ring.

Imo, these movies should be called Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings because he changed too much of the story and characters to be called JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The movies were good for what they are but they're not the story from the books. Every secondary character in the movies are the opposite of what they were in the books. Faramir agreed with Frodo and sent him on his way in the book, he didn't try to bring him back to his dad and when Frodo shows the ring to the Nazgul he'd call the other Nazgul and they'd take the ring right there, game over. Theoden didn't treat Grima poorly in the book, he did in the movie. After Gandalf killed the Balrog he died because the mountain fell on him, no mention in the movie. Just because you changed so much of the story doesn't mean you delete or change the ending and make your own ending. If he hadn't changed so much of the movie to begin with, he could've had the actual ending. So no, it's not the best interpretation of the books. The Bakshi version is a much better telling of the books, but it's much less visually appealing. The Hobbit should've been one or two movies, max. There isn't enough content in the story to make three movies no matter how much you add to the story. And then again, you run into too many changes to call it the original story. Hopefully there will be actual versions of the books made into Movies or a 9-part series would be best.

A while ago I asked myself where, specifically, Tolkien might have read a story about "the unexpected luck of widows' sons" -- a phase Bilbo uses in his first conversation with Gandalf. The answer turned out to be 'The Red Etin', a story in The Blue Fairy Book, the first of Andrew Lang's colour Fairy Books; which Tolkien mentions as boyhood reading in 'On Fairy Stories'. There are in fact three widow's sons in the story, together with some other parallels: -- a knife which changes colour -- a helpful raven -- a riddle game, which the evil Etin knows it is bound by. It also has three heads -- the rescue of a princess Thematically, the hero wins through because like Bilbo he is at once generous, brave, and prudent. Thus prefiguring the theme of Providence favouring those who deserve it. The story (though presented as traditional, and told in the Scots language) is in fact a nineteenth century pastiche by two other Scottish writers, Peter Buchan and Robert Chambers. It was suggested by an older story, The Red Etin of Ulster, of which only the name has been preserved. (Resembling in this regard The Black Bull of Norroway, another story in 'The Blue Fairy Book' which is Tolkien's central example of a Eucatastrophe.) I don't say the The Red Etin is the primary inspiration of The Hobbit. However I do think it served as a foundation, perhaps assimilated and forgotten, for the moral element as well as a few details.

For anyone getting this recommended to them more than a year later, I have a couple of things to say. First, Dan Wells, the author doing the podcast with Brandon Sanderson, is actually an excellent author. He has expressed his weird enjoyment of objectively bad media before on the podcast, and I think he mostly just enjoys seeing how bad it is. Second, some people are talking about how Brandon Sanderson was one of the executive producers of the amazon wheel of time show, so hes a hypocrite. I heavily disagree with this also. He requested many changes in the show that did not go through, and he did not actually get much of a say.

So actually I have found an earlier version for the word Hobbit, it is in the list of the names of fairy folk in the Denham Tracts which is a series of pamphlets printed in 1895 just in time that it could've been one of the many fairy tale books that Tolkien read while he was a kid, then forgot until far later.

There the Light-elves and the Deep-elves *(or Gnomes)* and the Sea-elves went and lived for ages, and grew fairer and wiser and more learned, and invented their magic and their cunning craft, in the making of beautiful and marvellous things, before *they* came back into the Wide World. @@TheOneRingcom For the '51 edition, Tolkien had sent in some proposed changes to A&U and they were just implemented (the big one being the the changes to Riddles in the Dark), without his consultation.(At least as I recall the events, as you are reading History of the Hobbit, Rateliff may address that, I don't properly recall off hand). For the '66 edition the revisions were done at Tolkien's direction. The Hobbit was deliberately revised to put it in line with the so-called 'Round World' version (the sun and moon being extant, rather than created from the Two Trees, and thus more in keeping with LotR, which also has the extant sun & moon).

I can't really think of a way to fix the show. The forging of the other rings and the one ring are essential to the story they actually have the rights to. Somehow, the elves will have to be tricked...again... which will make them look even stupider. No matter what they do, Galadriel is still responsible for the rise of Sauron and all the evil that comes after. I dont know how you redeem such a character. The creation of Arda and the Valar might be cool to see in film, but it doesn't really make sense for the show. If they actually show this part, they will be effectively pausing the show to give an orgin story even though they basically had an orgin story in season 1. Some of these rumors are likely false so its difficult what to make of them. With regards to Tom Bombadil, it seems like this is episode 9 in Star Wars, and they are just throwing in things they think fans will think is cool.

The oath has a nice parallel to the oath sworn and broken by the dead men of Dunharrow, that Aragorn calls to service. Those corsairs were Southrons, and are going to suffer a lot under a 5-month snow. Actually, the snow is kind of a gift from the Valar. Its hard for everyone, but its harder for the Southrons, and that likely helps Gondor as well.

For me, the biggest issue with all these “girl boss” characters is that they have all of the “toxic masculinity” traits in a female skinsuit and for some reason that is applauded by corpos and msm journalists

Although before Melian and Celeborn, back in Valanor she was called Man-maiden for her stature and athleticism and fiercely fought to defend her mother’s people in the first kin-slaying and suffered the trauma of the grinding ice and could be fairly speculated that she likely had a different, much more Noldorian, temperament that was healed with confession to Melian in the court of Thingol.

Tom Bombadil is definitely not the son of some valar... Considering he's as old as them... I think its explicitly stated by Elrond at the council he has no father, except I imagine for Eru...

It seems that this is an interpretation of the text, it simply states that he arrives before the Valar, it doesn't say he's as old as or is a Valar.. If you can find a way to disprove it I'd love to know, I'm still trying

I don't understand the apoplectic nerd rage over ROP. Who cares if it isn't slavishly devoted to Tolkien's words? Like any adaptation, IT DOESN'T MATTER. It only matters if it's good. It seems very well made to me. I should say, I actually do understand it. When I was in eighth grade, I read Jaws. Then I saw the movie, and I couldn't understand why they changed things and left out things. Now I understand that the movie is much better that way, it would have sucked if they had everything exactly like the book. Because it wasn't the book! Edit: I'll bet there are still some who think Jackson should have had Gollum fall into the lava while dancing, and should have included the Scouring of the Shire...

I run a big Discord server for the Lord of the Rings Online MMORPG. I am also a massive, lifelong nerd for Rohan and its lore. Obviously, all Tolkien-related movies and TV shows are a big topic of discussion. Predictably, my criticisms of the *feminization* of the War of the Rohirrim film draw the inevitable fussing from the younger, woker playerbase. No matter how plainly I explain Rohan's history and lore, even quoting directly from the texts, it falls on deaf ears. It's exhausting. But I will keep fighting the good fight as long as I have the heart to do so! Helm's daughter is barely mentioned, she is never named, and there are no actions or events of note where she is included. Forcing her into this "badass, army-leading shieldmaiden" role is so obnoxiously grating on my sensibilities as a woman, and a Tolkien fan. Where's Frealaf? Helm's nephew, the guy who ACTUALLY came and defeated the Dunlendings after Helm's death? I haven't seen a single mention of him in any articles about the film.

The Rohirrim is intended to be a sort of proto-Anglo-Saxons, and to me they very much seems inspired by the Goths and other Germanic peoples in late antiquity, some of which were allies (for a while) with the Romans. The ride of the Rohirrim is also inspired by the Polish-German army that helped save Vienna from the Turkish army 1683 with the Polish winged hussars at the front.

    • @squaeman_2644

The ride of the Rohirrim are more directly inspired off the Visigoths and the battle of Cataluan Plains, when general Aetius and king Theodoric formed an alliance against I think the Huns? King "Theodoric" i would fall in a glorious charge at the battle...

I hope and pray they don't ruin the movies, like Peter Jackson did. Hold your comments, the movies was amazing and more. But after reading the books again for like that 5 time since I was a kid, there was so much left out of the movies that were Key points and they changed stuff too. Plus I hope they keep it like JR. R. Tolkien style of writing,

There's a lot of red flags but people's comments on this are so canned and forced 'girlboss' we literally only have three screenshots and like, two sentences of comments. Calm down. People are so addicted to being haters in every way, it's so pathetic. "Éowyn says that women must ride now, as they did in a like evil time in the days of Brego son of [mark showing name omitted] Eorl’s son, when the wild men of the East came from the Inland Sea into the Eastemnet." from History of Middle-Earth VIII. I hope this is what they mean by 'call on the power of a seemingly long-lost tribe of female warriors', not an actual tribe but the SPIRIT/legend of them. I think she'll work fine as a POV character. There's a lot red flags honestly but I'm willing to go in with an open mind. If it's completely off the mark (I don't have a lot of faith in modern works lol) I'll say it but going into something with a hater mindset is sad.

No cares about talent or quality when you got “girl boss” and “woke”. This channel is dedicated to whining about how their right wing politics isn’t front and center in new Tolkien adaptations. I’m looking forward to this too! I’m sure it won’t be perfect. No adaptation is. You have to go to the books first that.

I totally disregard movie producers who have their hands on Tolkien's work. They don't care about his work or his legacy, all they care about is their own agendas and the revenue generated. Shame on the Tolkien estate for giving up the rights of J.R.R. Tolkien's work in the first place.
